| Any one have suggestion for a good starter DSLR camera? Hey! I need some suggestions on my FIRST DSLR camera. I've been taking classes,reading, and have a teenie tiny gallery! and since been using my uber low grade digital camera >.<; I was hoping to upgrade to a DSLR for more features, and to lenses (yay) However, I am kind of tight on money so something possible under 500? $200 would be great, but something still with good quality and I wouldn't need to change the body often, just buy lenses. |
| The newest and most innovative interchangeable lens system is the Olympus and Panasonic Micro Four-Thirds, offering true DSLR image quality and system flexibility with P&S weight. Choosing an interchangeable lens camera system is all about the lenses. The lens collection will define the maximum IQ you will ever be able to achieve. Lenses last a lifetime, hold their value, will be listed in your will. Bodies are good for several years, depreciate rapidly, end up at Goodwill. You should choose the lenses - those you want now and in the future - and only then select a body to hang them on. I came from Nikon film SLRs, and "wanted to want" a Nikon digital DSLR. Instead, I ended up with Olympus, in large part because their Zuiko Digital lenses were consistently superior to other mfrs, based on reviews at Dpreview, Slrgear, Popphoto. The basic kit zooms -- Zuiko 14-42mm and 40-150mm -- were best in class. The best wide-tele normal zoom you can buy is the Zuiko 12-60mm f-2.8-3.5 (TIPA "Best Expert Lens" for 2008). For extreme wide and tele at consumer prices, the Zuiko 9-18mm is the most optically accurate super-wide you can buy. The Zuiko 70-300mm is the only camera maker lens that reaches 600mm (35mm equiv) ar anywhere its price. For the ultimate in IQ, the Zuiko 50mm f2 macro is the best DSLR lens ever made for which there exist objective tests. And all mid- and top grade Zuikos are splash and dust proof. Leica lenses are fully compatible with Olympus bodies.. Next to optical quality, overall system weight is the most critical element in choosing a consumer DSLR, few of whom are willing to lug around a lb, vody everywhere. You will be more likely to carry lighter equipment, and thus more likely to catch that unexpected photo op. The E-620 is the lightest DSLR body made. The aforementioned MFT constitutes a whole new class of digital camera. Last month TIPA named the E-620 "2009 Best Entry Level D-SLR". Its built-in image-stabilization applies anti-shake to every lens mounted. Using inexpensive adapters the E-620 can mount and image stabilize almost any DSLR lens ever made. Olympus invented Live View. I can remember when other mfrs ridiculed Live View -- an Olympus innovation -- as unnecessary. As a macro shooter I find it essential. Ergonomics. Hold the cameras in your local camera store. Besides possessing a far more comprehensive feature set than its Canon and Nikon competitors, my E-510 felt much more solid, its lines fit the human hand better In sum, I wanted to choose Nikon, but couldn't ignore the reviews poimting me toward Olympus. If you choose based on lens quality, chances are you'll choose Olympus as well. Two years later, and its still one of the best choices I've made. |
